Last year it landed the Barrie Colts Andrei Svechnikov and saw Filip Zadina go to the Halifax Mooseheads – both will be top-five selections at in the 2018 NHL Draft.
Svechnikov, who joined the Colts after one season with the USHL’s Muskegon Lumberjacks, is currently third among OHL rookies with 19 goals and 13 assists in 24 games.
“The OHL is a bigger league and there’s a lot of skilled guys,” Svechnikov said of the move from the USHL. “It’s a little bit smarter league.”
For Halifax Mooseheads general manager Cam Russell, the import draft helps keep his program competitive in the league. And Russell has had his share of success in recent years of plucking high-end talent through the selection process.
“It’s very important. If you look at our league, we work very hard to bring the Americans in as well, and there’s not a lot of Americans,” Russell told Sporting News. “We don’t have the population that Ontario has. If you’re looking at the group of kids that you’re drafting from, you need the help of the Europeans really to help compete with the other markets out there.”
In 2016 Russell took current New Jersey Devils rookie Nico Hischier with the sixth selection. In 2015, the Moosheads selected Otto Somppi, later a seventh-round pick of the Tampa Bay Lightning.
Five years ago Halifax plucked future Winnipeg Jets sniper Nikolaj Ehlers in the import selection and in 2013 the Mooseheads selected the San Jose Sharks" Timo Meier, each selected ninth overall in the 2014 and 2015 drafts, respectively.
The previous success helped Russell’s Mooseheads land Zadina in 2017. The 18-year-old Czech native was originally taken by the WHL’s Vancouver Giants in 2016, but didn’t report.
Zadina admitted Halifax’s reputation for churning out NHL talent in recent years helped come to his decision.
“I want to be like them,” Zadina said. “I want to follow in their steps. Halifax helped them a lot; that’s for sure. We were in contact with the Halifax Mooseheads and they drafted me. I was so glad they did.
“I said I have to go there because they’re one of the best organizations in the (QMJHL). I wanted to go 100 percent.”
The regions in which the QMJHL can select players through its league draft make the import draft even more vital. Unlike the WHL, which has as many as 21 states to pull players from in its bantam draft, the only U.S. territory the Quebec league has is New England where they have heavy competition from Division 1 colleges.
“There’s a lot of kids that play at Division 1 schools there,” Russell said. “It’s difficult, we don’t have a lot, we’re starting to see more, which is good. You want to get the best players and the you’re looking at Europeans, you’ve got to make sure you’re bringing in a couple of players that are going to be top players for you.”
Knowing how important this draft process is, here’s an exclusive look at the Top 5 players ranked for the 2018 CHL Import Draft compiled by ISS Hockey for all 60 CHL teams along with scouting reports from scouting director Dennis MacInnis:

Marie Greyhounds (OHL).
The CHL Import Draft has been instrumental in helping put WHL teams on the path to the Ed Chynoweth Cup, but also influential on NHL teams selecting foreign talent as players adapt to the North American game. With that, we will look at each of the selections made by WHL clubs at the 2018 CHL Import Draft.
